Allaire Announces Business Strategy

Allaire has announced plans for new products or improvements in five areas: application servers, packaged applications, visual tools, Web systems management, and business-to-business integration. New products are built on ColdFusion, but also integrate Allaire's new Java acquisitions.

JRun 3.0 will be released in the second quarter, and will be based on the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) spec. The next version of Spectra will be released in the fourth quarter of this year, and will include support for more customer interaction services. (See article on acquisition of Open Sesame).

New products forthcoming:

  1. Code Name "Pharaoh": a new version of ColdFusion running on a Java app server that will include support for CFML, JSP, as well as JRun and will be backward compatible to older versions of ColdFusion. Release Time: First quarter of next year.
  2. Code Name "Harvest": a systems management tool designed for enterprise environments with multiple servers. Release Time: First quarter of next year.
  3. Code Name "Tron": A Business to Business integration server that uses XML to exchange information between businesses.

Announcing a New Site: iRenovate.com

Anyone who wants to see a well-designed, extremely slick ColdFusion site should go to iRenovate.com, Steve Nelson's new business. I am not by nature a fix-it person, but I found the combination of layout, articles, discussion forums and tools shopping cart to be very appealing. And I really appreciated the convenience of a randomly generated password sent straight to my email.

ASP4HS: Help for ASP Developers Who Like HomeSite!

This site gives insights into how even "the other side" likes HomeSite, Allaire's web editor. Perhaps we shouldn't be thinking of them as "the other side." There is some support for ASP in the current versions of HomeSite and Studio, and more to be had with several listed add-ons on the ASP4HS site. Allaire has designated a contact who is working with the ASP HomeSite development community to develop more ASP features for HomeSite 5.0.

Spectra 1.0: XML Parsing Error

Problem: In Spectra 1.0, when a created objects exceeds 64 kb, ColdFusion may truncate anything over those first 64 kilobytes. (This has to do with limitations of ColdFusion SQL statements involving insert and update transactions having long text data types.) Therefore, the following error occurs:

"Error Occurred while Processing Request
Error Diagnostic Information
XML parsing error: no element found (error code 3,line 1, column 0, buffer offset –1)"

Solution: The XML parsing error has been fixed in Spectra 1.01. In the interim, see the URL below for some workarounds:
