FREE ColdFusion Hosting, Tips and More
Michael Smith, of TeraTech Inc, has alerted us to this new,
FREE ColdFusion hosting and information site, brought to his
attention by Nathan Stanford:
www.cfm-resources.com
Currently, there are no limits on bandwidth, etc., but the site only accepts MS Access databases.
Nathan is working with the site operators to provide CF
developers with a Chat Room, Message Forums, CFTags
library and a CF Portal. Also coming soon will be a new
ColdFusion Tips site, http://www.cftipsplus.com. Nathan
recommends checking out the site, "even if you only want a
test site for ColdFusion ... or [if] you need a site for someone
else and you need to use ColdFusion." The sites are banner-
free and have integrated Nathan's informative tips and
tutorials. Nathan welcomes suggestions on topics developers
want to see covered, questions they want answered, and site
features they want added. He can be reached at
cftips@nsnd.com.

CFUN-2k Report
by Eva Holtsmark
(Pictures Courtesy of Michael Smith of TeraTech, Inc.)
Missed CFUN-2k two weeks ago? What happened?!? CF *stars* spilled their
guts, sharing CF art with mortals. Get the code! It's free. Visit http://www.cfconf.org/cfspeakers.cfm.
CFUN-2k was sold out -- even though the event was free! Over 600 CF
developers braved bad weather to fill the Masur auditorium at NIH, sending
some to an overflow room linked by video.
A packed crowd enjoying some CFUN, TeraTech style.
A BIG 'Thanks!' to the CFUN-2K sponsors:
Some Highlights of the Event:
Adam Churvis, CommerceBlocks (http://www.commerceblocks.com)
Topic: CF Stored Procedures and Triggers
Build your frequently accessed queries in stored procedures
and create triggers to INSERT, UPDATE and ROLLBACK transactions.
Check out DatabaseBlocks. You'll realize a complete return
on your investment $79 in one day (you can still charge your customers
the same rate).
http://www.commerceblocks.com/databa/index.cfm
While watching the demo, one CF programmer remarked, "I
just saw you do something in two minutes that took me three hours one afternoon
last week. What a deal." Another commented in amazement, "Where were you
three months ago? I just spent that much time doing what you just did!!"
Tip: Wait for version 2.0, out in 2 weeks.
Christine Pascarella, Virtualscape (http://www.virtualscape.com)
Topic: CF Hosting Tips
What should you look for in a CF web host provider? Weigh
security against features, and decide which is more important to you.
Charlie Arehart, Systemanage, Inc. (http://www.systemanage.com)
Topic: Developing Wireless (WML) Applications with CF
Charlie is a contributor to the first book on WAP. For more information, visit http://www.wrox.com/Consumer/Store/Details.asp?ISBN=1861004044.
To CF serve your wireless applications, the CF code is
<cfcontent type="text/vnd.wap.wml">
|
and for JRUN, it's
<%@ page contentType="text/wml" %>
|
If you are sending tiny cards because the GUI interface
on a phone is tiny, get your emulator at http://www.phone.com.
Other WAP Resources include:
Keynote Speech
Peer-to-Peer networking enables everyone to communicate
with everyone immediately.
In the past, the cost to communicate was high so vertical
hierarchies necessitated communication channels be linear, up the chain
and down the chain, instead of across the chain. Networks are stronger,
faster to process info and can adapt to change better.
Why share our knowledge? Because we can! The value of
a network increases exponentially as more people join it.
Who wants to be a CF_Millionaire? (The Game)
http://www.cfconf.org/cfmillionaire.cfm.
Written by Amy Brooks, Adam Churvis, Michael Smith and Charlie Arehart.
Adam played Regis.
The first of 10 people to answer the CF question correctly
got to be a contender. The questions ranged from easy to difficult. The
audience participated when called upon.
Who knew we knew so much? Or didn't.
Topic: Dynamic E-Mail Using CF and the inFusion Mail Server
CFMAIL and CFPOP. Send dynamic e-mail, check out the iMS
demo that retrieves a list of stock quotes and emails them back to you.
Simply send email to stockquote@coolfusion.com and in
the body of the email put a list of stock ticker symbols.
For example: symbols=allr,ibm,ncr
Don't put any spaces in between the symbols. If you don't
want an HTML formatted email then also put in the command mode=text in
the email as well.
For example: symbols=allr,ibm,ncr mode= text
For more information on IMS Server, check out http://www.coolfusion.com/iMSDetails.htm.
FusionMail is a FREE e-mail server to add to your InFusion
Mail Server bundle: http://www.coolfusion.com/FusionMail.htm.
Topic: Electronic Commerce: emerging trends and technology
Business is booming. There has been consolidation in e-commerce
world: who will be the Wal-mart of e-commerce?
The next big things are 'application syndication' like
CyberCash and agent-based interaction, like http://www.internetvan.net/.
Topic: Advanced Fusebox (http://www.fusebox.org)
Steve gave both his talk and one for Hal Helms (who was
home sick with a root canal). Fusebox is a FREE methodology for web application
architecture available to the CF community so that you can develop efficient
applications from the start.
The Fusebox architecture increases teamwork efficiency,
productivity, and reduces the time it takes to build a web application.
The first CF conference on Fusebox will be Saturday, September
16, in Charlottesville, VA. See http://www.fusebox.org/conference/
for details.
Topic: Content Management in CF
Do you want to develop applications or manage content?
Let your organization publish with less work from you. Can't afford Spectra
($16,000 to start)?
Try eMPower ($2,999). eMPower enables key content providers
(HR, Product Marketing, PR, etc.) to manage their own Web content while
keeping complete administrative control and functionality in the hands
of Webmasters and IT professionals.
eMPower is a simple, affordable and scalable Web authoring
and content management application to be used with a CF-based Internet
or Intranet Web site.
Shark Club Event
More than 100 CFers had a party at the Bethesda shark club
(yes there are real sharks in a tank!), played pool and drank beer. Sponsored
by Granularity, Coreactive and TeraTech.
Playing it cool at the Shark Club.
Topic: CF arrays, structures and WDDX
Arrays are collections of related data records.
TIP: use ListtoArray and ArraytoList; they speed up your
application.
<CFSCRIPT> saves time with <CFSTRUCTURE>.
WDDX is a programming-independent, platform-independent
method to share data. It's XML.
April Fleming, Federal Data Corp. (http://www.feddata.com/) and Orlando CFUG
Topic: WDDX case study: Building a cross-CFUG search
Serialize. Deserialize. Packet. Do these words intimidate
you?
Have no fear.
Serialize--marking up data to WDDX format.
Deserialize--extracting data into native language format.
Packet--serialized data (a long ASCII text string).
Get the WDDX SDK at http://www.wddx.org
to develop your own WDDX apps.
Visit the Orlando CFUG for more WDDX code at http://cfug.itcenter.org
and the Ohio Area CFUG at http://www.oacfug.org.
Topic: Access and CF Tricks
Access can and is used with ColdFusion. It is especially
useful for collecting form information in a non high-concurrency environment.
Be sure to use <CFLOCK>.
Tips:
Integration with Flash
Is Flash just for flash? NO! But, you can have the most
optimally built CF website and if no one wants to visit, it's wasted effort.
The interface does matter; flashy entertainment does engage
consumers.
You can reference Flash as an object in JavaScript and
Flash can load variables. Your database can interact via your Flash interface.
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/special/five_launch/
CF Family Feud (The Game)
Chris Mozier, Weberize (http://www.weberize.com)
The 'Open Tags' vs. the 'Closed Tags' tried to guess the
most popular answers to the survey, "Survey says ..."
http://www.cfconf.org/familyfeud/ffresponse.cfm
The number one answer in the Family Feud quiz to Q:"What
reason do you give a client when a project is late?" Biggest A: "Scope
Creep", Smallest A: "Dog ate it"
Chris Mosier (MC) hosting at CF Family Feud, with the 'Open Tags' (Steve
Drucker, Mike Dickinson, Steve Nelson, audience member and Judith Dinowitz).
Topic: eXtreme Debugging
Use iterative solutions, don't check 'the whole enchilada'
at once.
Tools make it easier for you to debug your CF applications.
CF Studio lets you 'Validate Document', but what if your issue is more
than that?
For free NT debugging, go to http://www.sysinternals.com
To telnet and diagnose (what?), use http://www.10pht.com/~weld/netcat/
For recording proxy scripts, go to http://www.compansr.demon.co.uk
or http://homer.rte.microsoft.com
BUY the NT Resource kit! It is worth the money! Read http://www.win2000mag.com
and use the Microsoft support site when necessary (http://support.microsoft.com)
Michael Dinowitz, Core Active/House of Fusion (http://www.coreactive.com),
Fusion Authority
Topic: CF Programming Philosophy
There are 450,000 CF developers, but only 1,800 people on
CF-Talk http://www.houseoffusion.com/hof/lists/CF_Talk.cfm
sharing information and 30,000 more are subscribers to CFDJ (http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/).
There are incredible resources available to the CF community.
Are you contributing your knowledge by writing? Are you reaching out to
the people you know to include them and increasing the pool of CF developers?
CF is programming. Program CE (continuing education) into
your CF day.
Michael and Judith Dinowitz at the Fusion Authority table with the
first ever print issue of Fusion Authority!
Steve Drucker, Figleaf Software (http://www.figleaf.com)
Topic: CF, Flash, Java and COM
Spec the problem. Uncover the business processes BEFORE
you build your software model.
Maybe, just maybe, the PROCESS needs a changin'. Simplify,
simplify, simplify.
Use a 'single template wizard' constructor.
Get more code at http://www.figleaf.com/figleafhome/cfug/cfugnews.cfm.
Topic: CF Custom Tags
Charlie generously spoke in Leon Chalnick's absence (Caught
in bad weather on plane from LA) on this topic.
Your custom tags can be placed in your local directory
on your server. David Aden http://www.wwstudios.com/ Topic: Spectra Tips
and Tricks
Tip: Highly relational data should not be moved into Spectra.
Spectra is a content OBJECT database.
What should you know before you even begin with Spectra?
-
stored procedures
-
custom tags
-
conceptual idea of WDDX
-
request scope (thread safe)
The example is http://www.hr.com, where the pages are stored
in a relational database and the content is stored in Spectra.
Once you pass the steep learning curve, Spectra is RAD
(Rapid Application Development). Talk with your Spectra peers at http://www.houseoffusion.com/hof/lists/Spectra_Talk.cfm
and David will help you, too, by phone and in your office.
CF Panel and Dr. CF
There was also a CF panel of experts and speakers to answer
attendees' questions. Plus, in the corridor Dr. CF (aka Douglas Smith of
TeraTech) took ColdFusion problems for 5 cents each (a la Lucy in Peanuts)
Panel of CF Experts being asked a question by audience member.
Some of the experts confer: (Left to right) Steve Drucker, Robi Sen, Dave Aden,
Joan Falcao, Bill Rogers
"CF Doctor" Douglas Smith practices CF medicine.

Tech and Tags
What's new in the Tag Gallery
- round
- Simple little tag that sets performs a round of
number that way you would expect based on the precision specified. This is a
first simple version without error handling, and I hope everyone enjoys it.
- WebWidget Open Source
- This application makes the maintenance and generation
of standardized web sites a snap. It's designed for the IS/IT/ISP
professionals that have to maintain a lot of content pages and want to put the
responsibility of content creation and site updating onto the owners of the
data. The Widget can be used to serve content out of a live database, or have
it publish HTML pages.
- CF_Q
-
CF_Q provides a Queue data structure implementation
for ColdFusion. It can create and initialize a queue from a string, list or
array; and get queue elements. CF_Q also provides an optional parameter MaxLen
that can be used to restrict the queue length. You can choose to prune old
elements or return them to the calling scope if the MaxLen is exceeded. See
readme for more details.
- cf_stockdata
- cf_stockdata makes a cfhttp request to yahoo's text
based version of a quotes page, and formats the data, returning an associative
array with last trade, point change, percent change, and company name. This
tag can handle stocks trading on 'normal' exchanges (such as NYSE and NASDAQ),
mutual funds and other exchanges (e.g. tickers ending with .OB), as well as
Index symbols (e.g. ^IXA)
- EVOLUTION
- EVOLUTION is a compleate web enabled, secure practice
management system that includes: (EMR) Electronic Medical Records On-line
Referrals On-line Authorizations On-line Pharmacy Drug Formulary Electronic
Claims Submission (CME) Continuing Medical Education Scheduling Medical Forums
- CF_AccuInternational
- To get this to work just go in to the weather for
some place international go through it by continent, country, then finally
city. There will be the forecast for that city. Cut and paste the url and put
it as the parameter on the tag. There is somewhat of a pattern with cities to
the country, but then you would have to know how AccuWeather abbreviated the
country. I figured it was easier just to cut and paste the url.
- CFX Tags for IBM MQSeries "PUT" and "GET" functions
- Make seamless calls to IBM MQ messaging system via a
single Cold Fusion tag from anywhere - Send text data files of size up to 100
MB - Dynamically build the data buffer for the IBM MQ message descriptor -
Provide identifiers for the message file which can be used by the receiving MQ
system in uniquely identifying the source of the incoming MQ message - Instant
interface between the web clients and the corporate legacy systems
- Ability to retrieve MQ messages via a ColdFusion Web page - Support for
numerous file types (such TXT, PDF, WORD, HTML,EXE, etc.) - Dynamically build
the data buffer for the retrieval of the IBM MQ message for increased
efficiency and performance - Retrieve messages based on a unique idenfifier
(MQJOBID) - Instant interface between the web clients and the corporate legacy
systems
- XMLParse
- Parses any well formed XML document into a coldfusion
structure
- CF_SimpleSurvey
- CF_SimpleSurvey is a simple three choice survey application that can be applied to any website powered by ColdFusion. The tag contains both a display and admin side, determined by the USAGE attribute. The tag is database driven and completely customizable to your site specifications.
- QStats v1.0
- QStats is a site statistics application that allows you to track and log the traffic within any .cfm page. It has a very pleasing interface (that is customizable), and reports on just about all the information you will need.
- CF_INITCAP
- This tag enables you to format a textstring ex: a user subscribes him as "vAn dE veLdE JohaN" the tag reformats it to "Van De Velde Johan" very usefull if you want to use something like: Hello 'Van De Velde Johan" welcome at my site. it is the same as the initcap function in oracle
- cf_pagecopy
- Tag will find an existing Spectra virtual page and create a new page with the same containers, and will optionally copy the contents of each to the new page. The new page's containers will then contain all the same object and method references as the original. Could be used to provide "defaults" for containers.
- 123 eggCart
- eggCart is hosted on our secure web servers. You simply create a config.htm file and upload it to your web site. This config.htm file tells eggCart the who and hows in regards to processing orders from your store. Wrap your products in the predefined hidden form field tags we supply and in a matter of minutes your products are shopping cart enabled.
- CFX_BEEP
- If you're like me -- running CF server on your PC and getting only a few dozen hits a day -- you may want to hear a beep when you get a hit. You can play different pages with different frequencies.
- UserManager Suite 2.0
- The UserManager Suite is a set of CFX extension tags for Cold Fusion which allow you to fully manage NT users and groups (local and global/domain). The functionality is a fairly robust imitation of the "User Manager for Domains" GUI. UMS also allows you to manage NTFS file permissions (ACls) on local, shared or network mapped drives.
- FuseMail 1.0
- FuseMail is a product unlike any other browser-based mail solution. FuseMail starts where other mail programs left off, allowing users a system that can be used anywhere in the world. FuseMail currently requires Internet Explorer, due to the cutting edge technology that is used to create a user GUI that is powerful and efficient. The main feature of FuseMail is an interface that is simple, clean and familiar. Users have all of the popular features that one would expect from a database driven mail solution.
- PDFConnect 3.0
- PDFConnect 3.0 allows data insertion into an Acrobat form from multiple queries, variables and scopes.
- CF_OutputRedirect
- CF_OutputRedirect is used to redirect dynamically generated content to an e-mail message, a file, or a variable. This is an invaluable debugging tool, and also is for use whenever redirection is needed. This tag must be used with it's corresponding end tag, which means it can only be used with CF4 or later.
- MyCommunity Framework
- The PcSnap.com Framework is a turnkey system that allows fully functional content driven sites to be launched within days.
- Content Tag Collection
- This is a collection of tags that allow you to manage your site's content. It's all open-source, so feel free to look around.

WebTechniques Looks at ColdFusion Markup Language
WebTechniques' Mark Cyzyk took a look at server-side
scripting languages, including Active Server Pages (ASP),
JavaServer Pages (JSP) and Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP).
He finds that "Performing simple tasks with these technologies
often requires a lot of overhead, resulting in code-heavy,
convoluted programs. ... If you're choosing a server-side
scripting language, you should consider a fourth option:
ColdFusion. Because it acts more like a markup language than
a programming language, ColdFusion is an elegant solution
for embedding code in HTML files. ... ColdFusion Markup
Language (CFML) ... competes directly with ASP and JSP."

Error Handling in ColdFusion
by Michael Dinowitz
This is a presentation that I created as part of the internal training at House of Fusion/CoreActive. The goal was to teach the programmers new techniques in error handling and educate them about some of the more obscure features. The presentation was then shown to the NYCFUG for their use and is now on the web for you. Unfortunately, the talk that went with the presentation was not preserved. If a user group or company wishes the full presentation, you can contact me at mdinowitz@houseoffusion.com.

get "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError" when trying to run an

Allaire Spectra 1.01 Hot Fixes
"Hot fixes are quick, downloadable code fixes to specific
issues. From time to time, Allaire may add additional hot fixes
to this page when problematic issues are identified and testing
of the hot fix is completed. Hot fixes are meant to be interim
solutions to issues that will be included in an upcoming
maintenance release or patch. Allaire strongly recommends
installing hot fixes in your test/staging environment prior to
deployment in your live production systems."
