In today's CF-Talk, Andy Mathews was wondering why Macromedia didn't include a set of image manipulation tags in ColdFusion. While one can wrap Java code in a CFC, or use an off-the-shelf commercial solution, Andy felt that Macromedia could easily include these tags in ColdFusion, which would make his life easier and add to ColdFusion's salability. The discussion here centers around whether Macromedia should focus on features that developers can easily develop for themselves, like image manipulation. One list member noted that creating PDF's in ColdFusion had been a complicated process until the release of ColdFusion MX 7 (which made it a huge selling point). On the other hand, as Andy pointed out, if it's easy to include, why not just put it in? One thing that was not discussed was the fact that image manipulation runs into certain copyright issues, where the codec for GIF is owned by CompuServe, and other codecs may have other licensing issues. Most packages that offer image manipulation go straight to JPG and do not offer anything that would require a licensing fee, a point which is usually overlooked. Image manipulation - Why Macromedia?!
