Pete Freitag Reviews SQL Server Express 2005
by Michael Dinowitz
For the last year, Microsoft has been offering a beta version of their free SQL Server Express (SQL Server Express 2005), apparently to compete against the open source databases that are out there. In all this time, all that I've heard have been complaints about its install and features.
This is Pete Freitag's second attempt to use this program, and he's not very happy with the results. He lists several problems, including a less than intuitive installation process and a manager that gives you a read-only view of your SQL Express Server and only allows you to run SQL statements, but won't let you edit your tables or do much management through the GUI interface. Pete's step-by-step description of how to install SQL Server Express, and his advice on logging in to the Manager will save you a lot of headaches if you want to try this product. We've tried it once or twice ourselves and quickly dropped it as a waste of time until Microsoft came out with better tools for it or at least a proper way to install.
