NEWS FLASH: Macromedia Lays Off 200

Dec 07, 2005
News has hit the community lists (first reported on a site called "Fucked Company" (http://www.fuckedcompany.com), a crude and rather disgusting site) with the announcement that "Rumor has it Macromedia/Allaire are gonna layoff around 200 people tomorrow morning [Monday, April 16th]." Commentary runs fast and furious. Not much of it worth reading.

Since that tip, an email has been circulating on House of Fusion's CF-Community list said to be from a former Macromedia employee, railing against the company. Some of our sources in the UK report layoffs there -- out of a staff of 47 on the European team, 13 remain.

Some layoffs may be expected when a merger happens -- you can't have two accounting departments. Also, obviously Macromedia is looking right now to cut costs. Everything is being reevaluated. But should we be scared that Macromedia is going down? No. They reported an increase in profits last quarter, if you remember (see http://www.fusionauthority.com/alert/index.cfm?alertid=58#stock3.) If the numbers here are accurate, these layoffs represent less than 10% of Macromedia's current staff. They should not be taken as a foreshadowing of Macromedia's doom.
