These Inner-City School Kids Need Your Help

Dec 07, 2005
Fusion Authority has become aware of a new program in Chicago's inner-city schools. One teacher, Tyrone Williams, was faced with the task of motivating his students, mostly African- Americans coming from a disadvantaged background, and giving them the skills to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. Despite their backgrounds, they have a burning desire to learn and grow. As part of a program to make these students Internet-savvy, Mr. Williams teaches a class on web page design, including HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, PhotoShop and basic server side programming.

Mr. Williams' students have learned the basic skills and are now looking for "real life" projects. In order to gain practical experience, they are offering to build web sites for free. What they are asking in return is a "Letter of Recommendation" upon successful completion of the site. Most of these projects will be completed over the Internet, using e-mail as the medium of communication. Mr. Williams believes that this kind of cyber-internship will open doors for these kids when they graduate from school.

If you have projects that could use an extra pair of hands or two, check out these bright kids:
