Hal Helms Training Classes

Hal Helms is offering these new classes:

Fusebox Mastery

Atlanta, GA, May 7-10. This class is very limited in size--6 people. The last one sold out very quickly.

Why attend? This class is designed for people who are expected to be the "Fusebox Answer Person" for their organizations. The class deals with the particular problems of complex, large-scale web applications. If you're going to build a large building, you need a strong, deep foundation and if you're going to build large web applications, you need a well thought-out architecture to support the inevitable changes that are required over time.

The problem is that the most obvious architectural arrangements are almost always insufficient, but their weakness is not at first apparent. The solution is the adoption of a Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern for Fusebox architectures. Using drag-and-drop code you'll receive at the class, you'll master MVC. Additionally, you'll learn how to handle security and create a robust exception-handling model.

Price for this class is $3750. If you work for a government, non-profit, or educational institution or are paying for this yourself, email or call me for a discount. ColdFusion Foundations

Atlanta, GA., May 27-29

Why attend? I consider this course, taught by Kathy Hester, manager of the New Orleans CFUG, to be vitally important for new ColdFusion developers. This is an excellent precursor to the Fusebox classes I hold. Too often, courses designed for ColdFusion novices give a broad introduction to ColdFusion, but fail to equip new CFers to write real-world code. Using materials I wrote specifically for this course, Kathy will teach you the following subjects:

  • ColdFusion: a request/response model
  • Tuning the Development Environment: Tips to make ColdFusion Studio dance
  • Understanding Variables: How to choose variable scopes based on the behavior you need
  • Complex variables: Arrays, structures, and lists. For newbies? Absolutely! The paradox is that "complex" variables actually make coding much simpler. You'll leave with a mastery that more experienced programmers lack.
  • Debugging and Testing: Separating professionals from amateur coders
  • Exception Handling: Why, when, and how you should handle exceptions
  • State Management: So many choices: request, session, application, server, and client variables. Learn when and how to use persistent variables.
  • Desert Island Tags and Functions: There are only 15 tags and 14 functions you need to handle 80% of the code you'll need to write. You'll learn these in depth during the course.
Price for this class is $1200.
