Horrified by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and now by Hurricane Rita, two ColdFusion companies have stepped up to the plate with donations to the Red Cross relief fund for Hurricane Katrina victims. Centrasoft.com and CFDynamics.com donated $900 and $1,000 respectively, and are urging other members of the ColdFusion programming community to contribute as well. They are running a campaign to encourage such contributions on their website http://www.coldfusionunites.com

It started when Brian Simmons of Centrasoft.com announced that he would donate 100% of the profits from sales of his software, CFMX Exambuster, for the eight day period of Friday, September 2nd, 2005 through Friday, September 9th, 2005 to the American Red Cross. When the folks at CFDynamics heard of Simmons' efforts, they encouraged others to purchase his software as well. Simmons was able to raise $900 from his sales, and CFDynamics matched his contribution with a $1,000 donation of their own.

Jason Egan, Vice President of CFDynamics, said, "We were amazed with Brian's offer to give 100% of his sales for a week to the Red Cross. Matching Brian's donation is one of many ways we contributed to the relief effort. We encourage other ColdFusion companies to at least match Brian's donation."

According to Simmons, his fund-raising drive was inspired by Nick Bradbury, original author of Homesite and TopStyle, who donated 100% of the profits from the October 2001 sales of his software to the 9/11 relief effort. "If I remember correctly, Nick raised over $31,000," Simmons said. "While I accomplished nowhere near what Nick did, he was the inspiration behind the idea, and I was able to contribute much more with the sales than I would have on a personal level."

Egan and Simmons continue to encourage others to donate to the relief efforts for Katrina, and now for Rita. They will publicize any ColdFusion company or individual that raises a sizable donation on their website, http://www.coldfusionunites.com, which contains a donation link to the Red Cross relief fund.
