McCarthy took a look at this issue in the 9/4/00 Government Computer News, using Allaire ColdFusion as an example as a viable alternative to choosing between the two: "Here's one scenario that combines aspects of both approaches: A single enterprise database, accessible via Web server, remains the backbone of the system, but from the Web server hang multiple independent app servers."
