Allaire Forums to Go 'Open Source'
At the 1999 Allaire Developer's Conference, it was announced that the Forums product would be released as open source. After some organization and work, the time is here. Allaire Forums is now an open source product. Rather than handle the maintenance of it themselves, Allaire has drafted veteran ColdFusion programmer and Team Allaire member Rey Bango to handle it. The software and documentation can now be downloaded from
http://www.forumspot.org. This site is designed to handle both the distribution of forums as well as new modifications to it.
This release has not come without controversy. An article on the well known tech site slashdot (http://slashdot.org/articles/00/05/16/1512238.shtml) attacks the release of forums as 'Abandonware'. Either way, I believe that the ColdFusion community will take the release of forums and run with it. Expect to see many modifications of the package in the near and far future.
