Macromedia Introduces Contribute 2

May 29, 2003
July 16, 2003 ? Today Macromedia introduced Macromedia Contribute 2, the second version of their tool that makes it easy for individuals and teams to update and manage content on existing websites without knowing HTML. Among Contribute 2?s new features are:

  • Mac OS X Support ? Contribute looks and feels like other Macintosh tools, and automatically detects and connects to .mac accounts.
  • Third Generation Site Connection System ? Contribute 2 allows for persistent connections even through firewalls or on dial-up accounts, using a new, high performance, threaded architecture with file caching.
  • Secure FTP Support
  • PayPal E-Commerce Tools That Ship with Contribute.
  • Macromedia Flashpaper Web Document Publishing ? This is one of the most exciting new features, in my estimation (currently available for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only). Flashpaper takes any printable document and converts it to a web-friendly, fast loading Flash format that can be embedded into any web page for a better user experience. It works with common documents, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, but also with more specialized formats like Visio, Project and Autocad, without requiring that website visitors have the application that initially created the original document. This opens up all sorts of possibilities for documents that are traditionally difficult to share, or that might require a large download, such as PDFs. And best of all, Flashpaper documents are up to 80% smaller than source documents.
Here?s a screen capture of Macromedia?s Reviewer?s Guide to Contribute 2 in Flashpaper. The printer symbol on top allowed me to print the document at full size directly from their web page without downloading it ? which saved me a lot of time and bandwidth.
