New Extension Alternative to Microsoft's ActiveX

Jul 03, 2004
Three major browser makers (The Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software ASA and Apple Computer, Inc.) announced that they are releasing a new extension to a plug-in API that's an alternative to Microsoft's method of using ActiveX for plug-in scripting. These three companies are working with Macromedia, Inc., Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Adobe Systems, Inc., on the extension.

Until now, companies like Macromedia and Sun used the Netscape plug-in API for their scripting, but the companies used different implementations of the scripting API. The new extension provides a unified approach to developing and running plug-ins across these three browsers, which should begin shipping with the extension by the fall. The updated Netscape plug-in API is being offered in an open-source licensing model.
