More Probes into the Purchase of Macromedia

Jul 10, 2005
After receiving preliminary information about the purchase in April, Federal antitrust regulators for the Justice Department have requested supplementary information about Adobe's proposed purchase of Macromedia. Increased scrutiny by government regulators is not unusual in the software industry, where the competitive landscape is less tangible than that of physical-product industries. Of particular interest to regulators are the companies' web-authoring design and vector graphics illustration products and the merger's effects on their pricing and availability. If regulators decide the merger is not in the industry's best interests they will challenge the merger, although this action will not guarantee termination of the merger.
