Larger Resolution Becoming the Norm

Summary by Michael Dinowitz

One of the biggest worries in site design is if all of the content will fit on the viewer's monitor. This has forced many people to write sites that will look best on 800x600 resolution monitors. Over time, this 'target' resolution will shrink, but it's still a concern with many. The question is: When do you consider it time to stop writing for smaller monitors and start targeting larger ones (such as 1024x768)? Onstat.com has some statistics that says that the time may be now. According to them, the number of website viewers using 800x600 has shrunk by over 6% in the last year, down to 18.23% of the global user share that they have polled. The other 80+% is made of 1024x768 or larger resolution users. While there is no solid way to know how many people are really using a specific monitor resolution, these numbers should be enough for many to start redesigning their sites for a larger width.
