The Dash to Senate IT Reform
Summary by S. Isaac Dealey
It's a well known fact that ColdFusion powers many of the IT initiatives launched by government organizations who adopt new technologies on seemingly glacial time-tables. It may however not be readily apparent how deeply entrenched the technology has become in
government agencies. Senate CIO Greg Hansen recently told Government Computer News (GCN) about the agency's new CIO Dashboard, developed in-house using ColdFusion to organize, examine and prioritize the Senate's currently 75 IT projects. Although the dashboard doesn't expose any sensitive data it provides a critical alternative to a morass of printed status reports. After considering a number of commercial alternatives, Hansen estimates that the agency saved over a million dollars by developing the tool in-house instead of modifying an existing commercial product. The project is such a terrific success that it's even inspired offers to purchase from some of those commercial vendors.
