Feds Urge Delay for '.XXX' Domain

Aug 13, 2005
Due to what could be considered religious pressure, the .xxx domain has been held off. This domain, created for content of an adult nature, would have been a boon for people who are trying to protect themselves and others from this type of content. It is far easier to simply ban anything from a .xxx domain than to try to keep track of all the various adult-content websites, which have in the past included such innocent sounding names as monthlyplan.com. (Not Work Safe)

The Commerce Department of the United States received more than 6,000 letters and emails expressing concern over the creation of this top-level domain. This prompted the Federal government to ask ICANN to hold off on making .xxx a top-level domain, though already there have been .xxx domains sold. What these protesters don't understand is that far from legitimizing pornography, creating .xxx will help concentrate it into a single location, which will make it easier to block these pornographic domains.

Hopefully ICANN will not bow to the pressure of well-meaning but misguided groups.
