Let's Not Forget Skype
by Judith Dinowitz
With all the Google hype that just came out, you might have missed another interesting news item. Skype, the most popular VOIP application, with over 50 million registered users in just two years, just announced that it will be opening up its technology platform, allowing any user to incorporate Skype technology into his or her web application. Earlier this year, Skype released an API for its buddy lists (the address book that's part of their program) and already, a small online developer community has sprung up around Skype, building applications tying buddy lists to telecommunications services. Google did something similar this year, releasing the API for their Google Maps application. With the release of Google Talk, the two companies are now competing in the same sphere ... MIT's Technology Review has an interesting analysis of where Google and Skype both stand, and how their interests are neatly dovetailing. The implication at the end that perhaps Google will end up buying Skype, a merger which would certainly cause major headlines.
