Developer Relations Update from Adobe

January 10, 2006 -- Shantanu Narayen, President and COO of Adobe, released a message to the developer community that I think you'll find very interesting. He began with the obvious pep talk, where he explained the strategy of the two companies combining and talked up some of the possibilities for integration, and he ended the presentation with a strong message of support for the developer community. He stated specifically that Adobe intends to expand the Developer Relations program. Macromedia's entire Developer Relations team has been kept intact, and Sara Spalding, who led the team at Macromedia, is still at the helm. ColdFusion developers can also look forward to meeting Ben Watson and Mike Porter, who drove Adobe's developer agenda prior to the acquisition.

Narayen spoke of the possibilities of integrating LiveCycle, Flex, and ColdFusion, and mentioned a new Adobe initiative, code-named Apollo, that will be the first integrated offering from Adobe. Apollo will be a next generation client for applications and documents that can work both online and offline. Adobe will be sending out more information about this in upcoming months.

Narayen repeated Adobe's promise to deliver an "engagement platform with seamless access to tools and solutions, with Flash and PDF as its foundation." What this means we still don't exactly know, but I guess we'll find out.

The main theme throughout was Adobe's commitment to its developers, and its intention to strengthen that relationship. Narayen stated specifically that user groups, Team Macromedia and the MAX conference were things that Adobe would like to continue to develop and expand.

He cited Adobe Labs as proof of Adobe's commitment to the developer community, and ended the update with a piece of tantalizing news: Adobe Labs will have some new products available soon, including updated versions of Flex Builder 2 and Flex Enterprise Services 2.
