Adobe/ColdFusion News Brief (May 12, 2006)
by Ryan Hartwich
Updates and Fixes
Early this week Adobe released the beta 3 updates to the Flex 2 platform (
http://labs.adobe.com). These include updates to the Flex Data
Services (the server component), Flex Builder (Eclipse based IDE), the ColdFusion/Flex connectivity pieces, etc. The final release is expected as soon
as late June.
Adobe released the 8.0.2 updater for Dreamweaver. The release notes are
rather brief. All you need to know is that the two major fixes are to the
code generated for server behaviors (minimize SQL injections) and active
content (EOLAS fixes for embedded Flash objects). The 8.0.2 updater
includes all of the fixes released in the 8.0.1 updater. You can
install it over 8.0.0 or 8.0.1 to be fully patched.

Hosting Issues
Are you planning on moving to a new ColdFusion host? I tried this week to port
a small ColdFusion-based Flash forms application to a new host, Godaddy.com.
I'm having problems getting the Flash form to show up in the web browser
(IE and Firefox on Windows XP with the Eolas fix in place). Two things to
immediately consider when moving to a new host:
- Do you need a 'fix' for things like Flash forms installed?
(Mystic/7.02 update beta 3 for ColdFusion 7)
(Note: Rumor has it that the existing cumulative hot fixes for 7.01 can cause problems;
if you don't need these fixes yet, you may want to wait until the final release.)
- Are any of the tags or functions in ColdFusion that you need disabled by your
host (very common)? For a list of tags that can be disabled, check out

Microsoft Fix for Old Flash Version Bug
Microsoft released a patch (
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-020.mspx) through their Windows Update service that updates the Flash Player in
some versions of Windows. The updated player fixes a known security
risk with older versions. Adobe/Macromedia previously released this fix
(i.e., it is not a new problem that MS is independently fixing). It
appears as if this fix is primarily intended for Flash Player versions below 6; however, it is
unclear if users are receiving updates to those versions, or a full upgrade to 8.0.24. There have been reported problems installing the fix
on older versions of Windows with old versions of the Flash Player. The best solution is for everyone to upgrade via Adobe's site to Flash Player 8 or Flash Player
9 beta 3.
