ColdFusion, the zombie of programming languages, often touted as dead but easily seen as alive, has a new weapon against those who continually try (and fail) to bury it. ColdFusion Builder, an Eclipse-based IDE tailored to ColdFusion, was just released. All the standards for an IDE are there: introspection, documentation, and debugging. What ColdFusion Builder adds that few IDEs have is the ability to write extensions for the product without having to be an Eclipse guru. Imagine — ColdFusion extensions for ColdFusion Builder written in ColdFusion. Does it get any simpler than that?

ColdFusion Builder's primary focus is ColdFusion 9 but it will work with previous versions of ColdFusion as well. Some of its features include:

  • Code Assist and Insight for CFML, HTML, CSS and SQL
  • Code Snippets (the ability to store pieces of code in the IDE and reuse them)
  • Refactoring or the ability to change all pieces of related code in one fell swoop.
  • ColdFusion Builder can now consume any (CFC) and generate data access CFCs
  • The Tag Wizard
  • Database and SQL Tools
  • A Line by Line Debugger
  • A CFML Template Preview
  • FTP/SFTP Support
  • Tail View Log Viewer
  • Server Management
  • Integration with Flash Builder 4
  • Built-in AS3 / MXML Libraries for Flex 4
  • AS3 persistence library for on/offline data synchronization
  • Embedded AIR 2.0 plug-in

A Special Deal: Buy ColdFusion Builder, Get Flash Builder 4 Standard Free!

ColdFusion Builder is priced at $299, and comes with a free copy of Flash Builder Standard. As Sean Corfield notes:

"WTF? Flash Builder is $249 on its own! Yikes, they're pretty much giving ColdFusion Builder away at that price — it's a complete steal!"

For detailed information on the new features and to download, please visit: http://www.adobe.com/go/cfbuilder. Like ColdFusion itself, ColdFusion Builder is free for educational purposes.
