AJAX Goes Wild
by Judith Dinowitz
Dan Grossman of
aventureforth.com has two excellent blog entries with a list of exceptional applications that use AJAX. His criteria for the list were applications that were:
- an appropriate combination of simplicity and rich functionality,
- somehow compelling,
- the more interactive, the better,
- and free.
I highly recommend at least viewing some of these links, and even trying out the applications. (Remember, they're all free!) I found the online calendar at
Kiko.com helpful, but my favorite was the Objectograph dictionary (
http://www.objectgraph.com/dictionary/), which prefills the screen with the proper page as you type in the word you're looking up. It comes with a thesaurus as well! What a great resource for a writer.
In the second blog post, Dan included some Flash sites as well (
Midnight Coders and
Goowy) because he really liked them. Midnight Coders showcases a series of example apps written in both Flash and AJAX. Goowy is a Rich Internet Application site that provides different free online applications built in Flash. The site itself is quite an experience; the use of Flash gives it a very smooth look-and-feel.
