BREAKING NEWS: Macromedia Reevaluates (and Eliminates) Hosting Service Provider Edition

Apr 23, 2001

If there was ever an event or action that will prove that Macromedia is listening to the ColdFusion community, then that event has just happened. On April 29th at 7pm in the evening, just one day before the release of ColdFusion 5 and a controversial new licensing plan, an email was posted on CF-Talk and several other lists at House of Fusion.

This email stated that based on community concerns, the following changes were going to be made:

  1. The Hosting Service Provider Edition, along with the licensing that went with it, would not be going into effect.
  2. The licensing would be altered to allow shared server hosting services.
  3. The new release of ColdFusion would be at the same pricing level as the previous (4.5) release.
(You can read this email at http://www.fusionauthority.com/alert/72/elim.htm.)

Let's be honest here. On almost every list that House of Fusion hosts, there was talk and concern about this. Talk of leaving CF, talk of the cost to host for the 'little guys', and more ... Even other ColdFusion-related lists were affected.

Macromedia proved themselves by listening to all this talk and deciding to take action. On Friday there was a partners meeting to discuss the new licensing. In the afternoon there was a FAQ to explain what was going on as well as other emails to the lists. Two days later we have what I would call a dramatic change. All I can say is "wow."
