Memory behavior is often the starting point of an administrator tracking down a problem. Despite steady increases in the "standard" amount of RAM available, a close examination of an application's use of system memory remains a critical part of the Quality Assurance process. This article describes some of the available metrics for tracking memory usage in Microsoft's Windows NT/Windows 2000, Sun Microsystems' Solaris, and Linux.
