All (Digital) Eyes are on Discovery

Two years after the Columbia disaster in 2003, the Space Shuttle Discovery will be launching. In the interim NASA has invested in equipping the shuttle with some exciting new sensors and digital "eyes" that should hopefully help prevent future accidents.

MIT's Emerging Technologies Newsletter has a fascinating article that describes the key technologies being used to upgrade the three working space shuttles.
